Attendance also available via Zoom. \nPlease register here (both in-person and Zoom links available). \nThe Arctic region is warming several times faster than the rest of the planet\, imperiling Arctic communities as sea ice and permafrost degrade\, coastlines erode\, Arctic storms intensify\, and the seasonal patterns of animals and plants rapidly shift. Amidst these changes\, there is increasing pressure for resource extraction\, including critical minerals for global transitions to low-carbon economies. Meanwhile\, new geopolitical tensions have put cooperative activities with Russia on hold\, including meetings of the Arctic Council – a trusted platform for science and policy cooperation between Arctic Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples for over 25 years. Arctic lands and waters have been stewarded for countless generations by diverse Arctic Indigenous Peoples. To reach sustainable\, peaceful solutions to the parallel challenges facing the Arctic today\, the co-development of knowledge and policy with Arctic Indigenous communities must be at the heart of future Arctic climate and security cooperation. \nMelody Brown Burkins\, PhD\, is the Director of the Institute of Arctic Studies in the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding at Dartmouth. Canadians tend to think of themselves as northern\, yet most of us are clustered between the 42nd and 49th parallels\, latitudes that aren’t even in the boreal region. What does this do to our perception of the North and to our understanding of Canada? \n \nSusan Nerberg will share observations from her work in the Canadian Arctic\, ranging from Tasiujaq (Eclipse Sound) in the east\, to Tuktuyaaqtuuq in the west. Meeting Indigenous Peoples\, northerners and scientists has amplified her understanding of “north” to include thousands of years of innovation and ingenuity\, but also climate change happening at two to four times the global average. As we race to understand the drivers and impacts of change\, the most important voices are those of the people who animate the North and live with the consequences of decisions often made in the South. \n \nSusan Nerberg is a freelance journalist\, writer and editor. An immigrant to Canada and a settler on Turtle Island\, she’s also Indigenous\, with Sámi roots on the coast of northern Norway. He directs the Department of Energy’s Next-Generation Ecosystem Experiments Arctic project\, a long-term endeavor that brings together 140 scientists from national laboratories and universities to advance Earth system models that predict how thawing permafrost in the Arctic impacts global climate systems. His research focuses on global change biology and plant ecology. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Colleen Iversen\n \n Distinguished Staff Scientist in the Environmental Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Group Leader of the Plant-Soil Interactions group. She uses a variety of field and laboratory techniques to understand and predict how ecosystems are shaped by environmental change. Her work takes her from upland forests to flooded peatlands to thawing Arctic tundra\, chasing a better understanding of the secret lives of roots hidden beneath the soil surface. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Peter Thornton\n \n Distinguished Staff Scientist in the Environmental Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and lead for the Earth Systems Science Section. He studies the interactions of land ecosystems with all other components of the Earth’s climate system\, including biogeochemical and physical land-atmosphere feedbacks as well as interactions with human systems. The latest-state-of-the-art climate models project profound shifts in ship-accessible season length\, with 100% navigation probability for part of the year\, regardless of vessel type\, above 2 °C of global warming for many regions within the Canadian Arctic\, including the Northwest Passage. However\, climate models do not capture local-scale ice dynamic processes that pose hazardous conditions to ships transiting through the Canadian Arctic. One such process is the collapse of the ice arches in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago and Nares Strait that allows thick multi-year ice from Arctic Ocean to flow southward into shipping lanes. Satellite derived sea ice motion from RADARSAT-1\, RADARSAT-2\, Sentinel-1\, and the RADARSAT Constellation Mission was used to document the sea ice area (and volume) flux through these regions since 1997. Results indicate that these regions are becoming even larger outlets for Arctic Ocean ice area loss because of climate change. This session will explore three perspectives from Cold Regions Research Centre graduate students who have had to make significant changes to their research design. \n1. Jeremy Harbinson\, MSc Student in the Remote Sensing of Environmental Change Research Group \nContrasting under-ice cycling of arsenic in a series of subarctic shield lakes with different morphometric propertiesThe subarctic shield near Yellowknife\, NT is populated with many small (<1.5km2) lakes. Historic mining activities in the region have left a legacy of environmental impacts on the landscape\, including widespread arsenic (As) contamination in lakes and soils. Subarctic lakes are characterized by a seasonal ice cover which can persist for more than half of the year\, yet little is known about the under-ice As cycling. The objective of this study is to contrast seasonal changes in As cycling within and between a series of lakes with different basin morphologies. We used a combination of water profile sampling\, sediment cores\, bathymetric mapping\, and snow and ice measurements to explore differences in As cycling between Handle Lake (Lk area= 0.21km2\, max. depth= 4m)\, Small Lake (Lk area= 0.73km2\, max. depth= 15m)\, Fiddler Lake (Lk area= 0.31km2\, max. depth= 7m) and Jackfish Lake (Lk area= 0.53km2\, max. depth= 8m) from November 2020 and August 2021. Continuous monitoring of lake physical properties (dissolved oxygen\, temperature\, and light) was conducted via data loggers installed at 1-m intervals in the lakes. Detailed profiles of water chemistry were collected monthly at the deepest part of each lake\, examining numerous key water chemistry elements with a focus on dissolved and particulate As concentrations. This project will contribute important information on the winter cycling of As\, which will help to inform our understanding of the chemical recovery of subarctic lakes from As pollution. Despite significant challenges and travel restrictions associated with COVID-19 pandemic\, we were able adapt and move forward with the project thanks to our local project partners and the Government of Northwest Territories. \n2. Mackenzie Bell\, MA Student in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies \nClimate Change Research in the Dehcho During Covid – 19For those of us in the fields of Environmental Studies and Geography the manner to which we have been able to conduct research has been drastically shifted due to the current Covid – 19 Pandemic. This presentation will discuss my research alongside the Dehcho First Nations and the Jean Marie River First Nations and will analyze how the Covid – 19 pandemic has affected my research regarding permafrost thaw and climate change in the Dehcho Region and how the application of traditional knowledge systems of the Jean Marie River First Nations can be effectively applied to develop a regional climate change plan for the Dehcho Region. This presentation will present a brief breakdown of this research alongside the Jean Marie River First Nations and discuss changes and adaptations that have been implemented due to the Covid – 19 pandemic. Additionally\, this presentation will discuss future plans related to this research for the current academic year. \n3. Alexis Jorgensen\, MSc Student in the Forest Ecology Research Group \nBoreal fire research during the pandemicClimate change is causing more and larger fires to burn in boreal North America. These changes are expected to influence the regeneration of both trees and ground vegetation\, with implications for wildlife habitat. My research examines the recovery of major wildlife forage species after fire and how environmental conditions mediate recovery processes. I then use this information to attempt to predict when wildlife\, such as moose or caribou\, are likely to use burned areas. My results are intended to be of interest to land-use managers charged with the effective conservation of wildlife habitat\, and northern communities who will be required to anticipate and adapt to the consequences of increased burning. To further this goal\, I originally planned to spend the summer of 2020 living in the small northern community of Kakisa and working directly with Ka’a’gee Tu First Nation. Similarly\, thawing of regional permafrost\, hydrological changes and vegetation growth may have future impacts on infrastructure development\, natural hazards\, archaeological sites\, and cultural keystone species such as caribou and berry plants. This talk will discuss some of the contemporary Cold Regions Science issues and research activities underway in Arctic and Subarctic by the Northern Environmental Geoscience Laboratory at Queen’s University. In this talk\, Dr. Way will discuss combining field observations\, community-based monitoring\, remote sensing and numerical modelling to bridge spatial scales and predict how landscapes in coastal Labrador will respond to climate change. \nDr. Way is a physical geographer who specializes in understanding the impacts of climate change on the terrestrial cryosphere (glaciers\, permafrost\, ice). Dr. Way is of Inuit descent (Nunatsiavummiut) and was born and raised in the central Labrador community of Happy Valley-Goose Bay\, NL.
