Not only are marine mammals facing habitat loss and ecosystem changes due to a reduction in sea ice\, but they are also facing increased human activity\, including increased underwater noise. DESCRIPTION:35th Annual Cold Regions Conference\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n November 26th\, 3:30 pm EST\nGlobal warming: A question of priorities\nDr. Andrew WeaverProfessor\, School of Earth and Ocean Sciences\nUniversity of Victoria\nDr. Andrew J. Weaver is a Professor in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria. He was also the Canada Research Chair in Climate Modelling and Analysis until he was elected as a BC Green Party MLA in the 2013 BC Provincial Election representing the riding of Oak Bay-Gordon Head. In 2015 Dr. Weaver assumed leadership of the BC Green Party\, leading them to an historic election result in the 2017 provincial election with three elected MLAs holding the balance of power in an NDP minority government. He returned to UVic after completing two terms as an MLA.Dr. Weaver received his B.Sc (Mathematics and Physics) from the University of Victoria in 1983\, a Master of Advanced Studies in Mathematics from Cambridge University in 1984\, and a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of British Columbia in 1987. He has authored or coauthored over 200 peer-reviewed papers in climate\, meteorology\, oceanography\, earth science\, policy\, education and anthropology journals. He was a Lead Author in the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 2nd\, 3rd\, 4th and 5th scientific assessments. He was the Chief Editor of the Journal of Climate from 2005-2009. \nDr. Weaver is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada\, Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society\, American Meteorological Society\, American Geophysical Union and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Over the years he has received a number of awards including the NSERC-Steacie\, Killam and Guggenheim Fellowships and the CMOS President’s Prize\, the Royal Society of Canada Miroslaw Romanowski Medal and the A.G. Huntsman Award for Excellence in Marine Science. In 2008 he was appointed to the Order of British Columbia and in 2014 he received an honourary D.Sc. degree from McMaster University. \nFor his work developing British Columbia’s CleanBC economic plan collaboratively with the BC NDP\, he and the Minister of Environment\, George Heyman\, received 2020 Clean 16 and Clean 50 awards for outstanding contributions to sustainable development and clean capitalism in Canada. \nHis book\, Keeping our Cool: Canada in a Warming World was published by Viking Canada in September 2008. DESCRIPTION:35th Annual Cold Regions Conference\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n November 26th\, 9:00 am EST\nThree’s a team: Understanding past\, present\, and future wildlife response to northern landscape change\nDr. Frances StewartAssistant Professor\, Dept. of Biology\nWilfrid Laurier University\nThe north has gone through many changes. Northern landscape change is undergoing ecozone scale shifts due to increased frequency and severity of drought and wildfires. These changes will alter resources for species and populations at risk\, with important distributional and demographic consequences challenging long-term conservation and management planning. Understanding past conditions that wildlife have faced\, quantifying current wildlife-landscape relationships\, and using this knowledge to forecast anticipated wildlife change are some of the key goals of the WILDlab at Laurier. I will present a few case studies\, highlighting skills\, species\, and concepts important for informing the future management and conservation of wildlife in Canada’s north. These span invasive and non-invasive field methodologies\, modelling\, and integrative forecasting projects on some of Canada’s charismatic megafauna. Her research group (the WILDlab) uses northern wildlife to understand current species-habitat relationships\, management and conservation efficacy\, while considering future landscape change. Dr. Stewart started her graduate work in Algonquin park while a MSc student at Guelph\, and has since conducted and led large trapping\, GPS collaring\, wildlife camera\, and ecological forecasting work in the Yukon\, NWT\, Alberta\, and British Columbia. She is excited to bring this experience with her to Laurier and to learning more about everyone else’s work being conducted through the Cold Regions Research Centre. \n X\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Jonathan Price\n Professor (ret.) University of Waterloo \n Jonathan is a recently retired professor within the Department of Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Waterloo with interests in peatland hydrology\, wetlands\, wetland chemistry and restoration and reclamation science. He serves as an associate editor for Mires and Peat. Before coming to Waterloo he held positions within the Geography Department at Queen’s University\, Kingston\, ON having gained his PhD at McMaster University\, Hamilton\, ON. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Andrew Weaver\n Professor\, University of Victoria \n Dr. Andrew J. Weaver is a Professor in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria. He was also the Canada Research Chair in Climate Modelling and Analysis until he was elected as a BC Green Party MLA in the 2013 BC Provincial Election representing the riding of Oak Bay-Gordon Head. In 2015 Dr. Weaver assumed leadership of the BC Green Party\, leading them to an historic election result in the 2017 provincial election with three elected MLAs holding the balance of power in an NDP minority government. He returned to UVic after completing two terms as an MLA. \nHis book\, Keeping our Cool: Canada in a Warming World was published by Viking Canada in September 2008.
